In episode 3 we discussed names and welcomed a new voice to the podcast.

If you want to talk about names with students you could use the following questions:

  • How did you get your name? Were you named for someone else? Who/why?
  • Does your name have a meaning?
  • Do you have a nickname (you are willing to share)? How did you get it? Who uses it?
  • Do you or other people shorten your name in any way? How do you feel about either the shortened name or the full name? (Many people feel they are going to be told off when someone uses their full name)
  • Do you like your name? Why/why not?
  • What would you like to be called in class?

Lindsay and Shaun referred to a number of ways to help remember students names including:  A seating plan, Throwing a ball, Referring to physical features, Internal monologue.  There are many websites that feature teaching ‘games’ for names.  You might find the following useful:


As your commute is coming to an end, here’s an idea for you to take into class. Use the students’ names as a way of revising a recent topic in class. So for example if you recently covered the topic of food, students think of a food beginning with a letter of their name; if it was adjectives they think of an adjective beginning with the letter and so on. Get the students to sit in a circle, someone starts by saying their name, and word that begins with the same letter as the first letter in their name (i.e. Chris and cucumber).  The next person in the circle would say, Chris and cucumber and then add their own name and word. This carries on all the way round the group. If you want to make it competitive, students are ‘knocked out’ the game if they forget any of the foods. Should the circle get back to the beginning, students add another word. For example Chris, cucumber and cauliflower. Keep going until only one student is left.
